It’s no secret that to increase club head speed, the bigger the arc you have and the farther back you can take the club, the more likely it is you’ll be able to generate more club head speed. Here’s the one thing that everybody underestimates how important and how valuable it actually is, and that’s keeping that left elbow straight, completely straight through the entirety of the backswing and initiating the downswing. We can keep that elbow straight the whole time, not let it flex at all. You’re going to maintain the distance of your hands away from your chest. You’re going to maintain a bigger arc with the club head, which means it can go faster. And then if you keep the core and the glutes engaged, then you’re going to give yourself a really good chance to make it go faster towards the ball.
So the split grip drill, we’ve done this tons of times where I’m just doing a really big split grip, taking it back, focusing on pushing away versus wrapping. So push away. I’m pushing my knuckles away from the target versus wrapping. And then I’m just going to try to replicate that sensation into the swing. Let’s see if we pull it off. Not bad. Little miss hit, little pick. 86, 110 ball speed, 128 efficiency ratio. Not horrible. The most important thing, focusing on keeping that left elbow straight. Now here’s a little disclaimer. When people try to focus on keeping that elbow straight, a lot of times you get the chicken wing action happening. So don’t be afraid to put the towel under the elbow. Take it back.
Go through it. Try the drill out. Split grip. Push. Push. Push. And then letter E, baby. Yeah!
