Why Senior Golfers Lose Driver Distance Before They Even Swing

Here is the honest diagnosis for every golfer who wants more distance and keeps trying to get it by swinging harder.

The distance is being lost before the club even moves.

That sounds early. The implications are big. Because the thought most seniors carry into the swing is to wrap the club around the neck, swing as hard as possible, generate as much speed as possible, and hit the ball as hard as possible. It feels logical. It does not work.

Dr. Berman’s approach is to change the thought from hitting the golf ball to finishing the swing efficiently. That starts with preparation, because proper preparation prevents poor performance.

At Berman Golf, that preparation means activating the big power muscles so the power can be delivered into the golf ball without swinging harder or faster.

Why Swinging Harder Kills Distance

Here is the thinking that has to change.

When the goal is to hit the ball as hard as possible, the focus goes to the arms and the club. The body gets left behind. The swing becomes a flip and a hope that the ball goes somewhere farther.

The fix is not more effort. It is a different goal. Finish the swing efficiently, and set the body up to do it.

Turn On These Power Muscles

Here is the address routine that sets the swing up for success.

Start with the core. In the address position, pull the belly button in. The core is engaged.

Next, the foot. Increase the pressure through the arch of the right foot. Try to find the ground with the arch. Try to flatten the arch into the ground. Now the foot is connected to the ground.

Then the glutes. They sit between the foot and the core. With the core engaged and the foot on the ground, the glutes are engaged too.

Now the golfer is ready to move the body, instead of just taking the arms back, flipping at it, and hoping and praying the ball goes farther.

The Backswing Fix for Feeling Stuck

Here is what happens next. After the muscles are activated, take the clubhead away from the golf ball.

Taking the club away gets the left shoulder down. Bringing the clubhead in does the opposite. It brings the left shoulder up, and from there the golfer is stuck with nowhere to go.

Throughout the backswing, keep the belly button pulled in. Dr. Berman calls this the key to everything. The moment the belly button lets go and goes back out, the bottom half is no longer connected to the top half. The result is flipping at it and hoping, and the ball does not go anywhere.

So at address, keep the belly button pulled in and the core engaged. Reach, reach, reach. The body turns. And no matter the age, the golfer is flexible enough and strong enough to get the left shoulder down to the golf ball. It just takes work.

Let This Lead Your Swing

Here is the thought that replaces trying to hit the ball with the clubhead.

Take the belt buckle in one direction going back, then the opposite direction coming through. Belt buckle to the right. Belt buckle to the left. Forget about the clubhead.

Most golfers get to the top and think about hitting the ball with the clubhead. The belt buckle should lead the downswing instead. The brain knows what is being asked of it.

Why Senior Golf Needs a New Approach

Here is the question worth asking.

If traditional golf lessons actually worked, there would be no distance loss and no reaching for the ibuprofen when making the turn heading into the back nine. It is time for a different approach. It is time for an activated approach.

The Knee Move That Frees Your Hips

Here is the piece that keeps the belt buckle moving.

Get the left knee as straight as it can possibly go so the belt buckle can keep going. The hips have to keep going. When the swing comes through on a bent knee, the golfer gets stuck.

It does not have to be completely straight. For golfers with bad knees, osteoarthritis, a knee replacement, or a hip replacement, that is understood. The goal is to get it straighter than it is now, so the belt buckle can keep going and the swing can finish.

Do This to Slow Down and Hit Farther

Here is the key that ties it all together. Slow down the backswing.

Dr. Berman puts it this way to make it resonate: the slower you go, the farther the ball will go.

Here is the reasoning. The slower the backswing, the more muscles stay activated: the core, the glutes, and the foot. The more muscles activated, the more power generated. The more power generated, the more can be delivered into the golf ball, and the farther it goes, thanks to the laws of physics.

Put the Whole Swing Together

Here is the full sequence.

Belly button pulled in. Find the ground. Foot connected to the ground. Glutes engaged. Take the clubhead away. Core activated. Let it go.

Want to know whether the core is switching off and the left shoulder is rising in the backswing right now?

Set the camera or phone up at two angles. One from the front, face on. One from behind, down the line. Film in slow motion. Swing.

Send both videos to gaindistance.com and Dr. Berman will give a free swing analysis. The first one is on him.

See exactly what the camera shows, not what the brain thinks is happening. The height of the left shoulder at the top and the bend in the lead knee through impact are two of the clearest things visible in slow motion, and two of the most commonly missed from the inside.

Want a Step-by-Step Blueprint?

If this resonates and the advice out there feels designed for 25-year-old tour pros, there is a simple blueprint built specifically for senior golfers.

It breaks down:
How the aging body changes
Which muscles actually produce power
How to gain distance without swinging harder
How to improve consistency while reducing aches and pains

It is written at a fifth-grade reading level with clear visuals and practical drills that can start immediately.

No gimmicks. Just clarity on how the body should move to play better golf for years to come.

Bringing It All Together

The distance is lost in the setup. Swinging harder leaves the body behind and puts the arms in charge. Preparation is what changes that.

Pull the belly button in. Find the ground with the arch of the right foot. Take the clubhead away from the ball and keep the core engaged all the way back. Let the belt buckle go back, then lead the way through. Straighten the left knee so the hips can keep going. And slow down the backswing, because the slower the backswing, the more muscles stay on.

At Berman Golf, the focus is biomechanics first. Not cookie cutter swings. The goal is teaching the body how it should move, especially as it ages, so power can be generated safely and repeated under pressure.

The in-house and online coaching programs are built specifically for senior golfers who want more distance and better consistency without beating up their bodies.

For anyone tired of advice designed for tour pros and ready for a blueprint built for their body, help is available.

Because when the body is set up to succeed, trying to hit the ball harder is not something to think about anymore. The distance just shows up.

And when the distance shows up without forcing it, the game gets soooooo much easier!
