Here is the most honest question in golf.
Is the weight actually shifting during the swing, or does it just feel like it is?
Most golfers cannot answer that question with certainty. Because weight shift is one of those things that feels like it is happening even when the camera or a simple foot lift test reveals it is not happening at all.
At Berman Golf, this drill solves that immediately. Not with a camera. Not with a launch monitor. With a simple dance move and two foot lifts that either work or they do not.
The Dance Drill, Equal Intensity Both Directions
Here is where this drill starts, and it is simpler than almost any other weight shift drill out there.
Swing the arms back and forth like a pendulum. Left, right, left, right. No club required. No full golf swing. Just easy arm swings in both directions with the same effort level each way.
Here is the critical piece. As the swing goes left, pick up the right foot. As the swing goes right, pick up the left foot.
That foot lift forces real weight transfer. It is impossible to pick up a foot without the weight having moved to the other side first. If the foot cannot lift, the weight did not shift. Simple, immediate, unchallengeable feedback.
The most common mistake is swinging hard one way and easy the other. The drill requires equal intensity in both directions. Same effort going back as coming through. That equality is what teaches the brain that the backswing deserves the same commitment as the downswing.
Add the Head Still Check
Once the foot lift feels natural, the next layer reveals whether the weight shift is a real rotation or a sway.
Do the same drill in front of a mirror. Watch the head.
If the head moves significantly side to side as the weight shifts, the body is sliding instead of rotating. A slide moves the weight but kills the power because there is nothing to rotate back against. A rotation keeps the head relatively still while the hips and core do the shifting.
The mirror makes this impossible to fake. The head either moves or it does not. When the head stays still and the foot still lifts, the weight shifted through rotation. When the head moves to make the foot lift possible, the body slid instead of rotated.
Feel the difference. When the head stops moving and the rotation happens correctly, the muscles in the hips, core, and legs immediately start working harder. The tension is there. The load is real. That physical sensation is what a proper weight shift actually feels like from the inside.
The Top of Backswing Test
Here is where the drill becomes a direct diagnostic tool for the actual golf swing.
Get to the top of the backswing and hold it. Static position. Now try to pick up the lead foot.
If the lead foot lifts cleanly without the head moving or the body lurching, the weight shifted correctly to the trail side during the backswing. The trail leg is loaded. The lead foot is light.
If the lead foot cannot be lifted without a significant struggle or a lurch, the weight is still on the lead side. The backswing happened without a real weight shift. And if the weight never got to the trail side, there is nothing to shift back to the lead side during the downswing.
This is the test that exposes the truth. Golfers who feel like they are shifting weight and are not find out immediately.
The Impact Position Test
Here is the second foot lift test that reveals whether the downswing weight shift is actually happening.
Get to the impact position and hold it. Now try to pick up the trail foot.
If the trail foot lifts cleanly, the weight has shifted to the lead side at impact. The lead leg is carrying the load. The trail side has released.
If the trail foot cannot be lifted or requires a significant shift and lurch to get off the ground, the weight is still on the trail side at impact. And weight on the trail side at impact is where chunks, tops, and the over the top move all come from.
The sequence needs to be trail side loaded at the top, lead side loaded at impact. Both foot lift tests confirm whether that sequence is actually happening or just feeling like it is.
The Door Frame Bonus Tip
Here is a simple setup that makes it impossible to cheat the head sway during practice.
Stand in a door frame with the head touching or nearly touching the frame. Go into the backswing and try to pick up the lead foot.
If the head sways, it hits the frame. The frame provides instant, physical feedback that cannot be ignored or rationalized away. The head either stayed still or it did not, and the door frame makes that fact undeniable.
Then get to the impact position and try to pick up the trail foot. Still in the door frame, head still not having moved. Both tests pass and the weight shift happened correctly without any head sway.
The Full Progression
Here is the order to work through this drill.
Start with the easy pendulum swing, feet lifting with each direction, equal intensity both ways. Do that until the foot lift feels automatic and the weight transfer feels real.
Add the head still check in a mirror. Keep swinging and lifting until the head stops moving side to side and the muscle tension from real rotation is felt.
Move to the static backswing hold and lead foot lift test. Confirm the trail side is loaded before moving on.
Move to the static impact position hold and trail foot lift test. Confirm the lead side is loaded at impact.
Add the door frame as a cheat prevention tool if the head is still swaying during the holds.
Only after all four stages are passing cleanly should the full swing be attempted, because only then is there confirmation that the weight is actually shifting correctly rather than just feeling like it is.
Get a Free Swing Analysis
Want to know whether the weight is shifting correctly in the swing right now, and whether the head is swaying or staying still during that shift?
Set the camera or phone up at two angles. One from the front, face on. One from behind, down the line. Film in slow motion. Swing.
Send both videos to gaindistance.com and Dr. Berman will give a free swing analysis. The first one is on him.
See exactly what the camera shows, not what the brain thinks is happening. The head position and foot pressure throughout the swing reveal the weight shift pattern immediately.
Want a Step-by-Step Blueprint?
If this resonates and the advice out there feels designed for 25-year-old tour pros, there is a simple blueprint built specifically for senior golfers.
It breaks down:
How the aging body changes Which muscles actually produce power How to gain distance without swinging harder How to improve consistency while reducing aches and pains
It is written at a fifth-grade reading level with clear visuals and practical drills that can start immediately.

No gimmicks. Just clarity on how the body should move to play better golf for years to come.
Bringing It All Together
Equal intensity pendulum swing with foot lifts. Head stays still in the mirror. Top of backswing hold with lead foot lift. Impact position hold with trail foot lift. Door frame as the cheat prevention tool.
Five stages. Each one confirms the weight is actually shifting before the next stage gets attempted. No guessing. No feeling. Foot either lifts or it does not.
At Berman Golf, the focus is biomechanics first. Not cookie cutter swings. The goal is teaching the body how it should move, especially as it ages, so power can be generated safely and repeated under pressure.
The in-house and online coaching programs are built specifically for senior golfers who want more distance and better consistency without beating up their bodies.
For anyone tired of advice designed for tour pros and ready for a blueprint built for their body, help is available.
Because when the weight actually shifts from the trail side to the lead side and the head stays still throughout, everything powered by that weight transfer finally works the way it is supposed to.
And when the weight shift is real, the game gets soooooo much easier!
