Increase Club Head Speed and Power With These 2 Simple Moves for Senior Golfers

Senior golfers often struggle to generate speed and power in their swing. Two key mistakes are extremely common:

  1. Bending the elbow too early
  2. Wrapping the club around the body

Both reduce your swing arc, lowering club head speed and decreasing power.

Step 1: Keep Your Elbow Straight

The first move is simple but critical: keep your lead elbow straight.

By keeping your elbow away from your body, your hands are further from your chest, creating a larger swing arc. A bigger arc automatically increases club head speed.

Next, focus on taking the club away from the target correctly:

  • Use an alignment stick to visualize the motion
  • Keep your left arm parallel to the target line
  • Avoid wrapping the club around the body

Most seniors aren’t strong enough to maintain this without practice. This drill trains the muscles without the weight of a club, so the elbow stays straight and the swing remains wide.

Step 2: Push Your Knuckles Away From the Target

A subtle but powerful adjustment is pushing your knuckles away from the target during the backswing.

  • This opens up shoulder rotation
  • Increases your swing arc
  • Maximizes club head speed

This helps train your body to generate power from the correct muscles rather than overcompensating with arms or wrists.

Step 3: Engage Your Trail Leg and Glutes

Once you’ve mastered the elbow and knuckle positions, it’s time to add power using your trail leg and glutes:

  • Slight bend in the trail knee
  • Push your right foot through the ground
  • Maintain core activation
  • Keep your giant arc from the previous steps

This combination ensures your hips, core, and glutes work together to deliver maximum force to the ball.

Step 4: Down the Target Line – Belt Buckle Forward

As you transition into the downswing, think about getting your belt buckle toward the target:

  • Maintain elbow straight
  • Knuckles pushing away from the target
  • Push the trail foot through the ground

This keeps your glutes and core engaged while transferring power efficiently into the ball.
