One of the biggest secrets to generating power in the golf swing has nothing to do with swinging harder.
It has everything to do with how you use the ground.
Many golfers believe power comes from the arms, shoulders, or swinging the club faster. But the truth is that the most powerful golfers in the world generate speed by pushing against the ground and transferring that energy through their body.
And the good news is that this concept can help senior golfers gain distance without putting extra stress on their bodies.
Why Most Senior Golfers Lose Power
As golfers get older, flexibility naturally decreases.
Because of that, many seniors try to compensate by swinging harder with their arms.
Unfortunately, that approach usually creates the opposite result.
Instead of creating more speed, it often leads to:
- Loss of balance
- Poor contact
- Inconsistent ball striking
- Reduced distance
The key isn’t swinging harder.
The key is learning how to generate force from the ground up.
Power in the Golf Swing Starts From the Ground
Every powerful golf swing starts from the ground.
When you push into the ground with your feet and legs, that force travels upward through your body.
This chain of motion moves through:
- The legs
- The hips
- The torso
- The arms
- The club
By the time the club reaches the ball, all that stored energy gets released into the shot.
If the lower body isn’t contributing to the swing, the upper body has to do all the work.
That’s when golfers start losing power.

The Role of Ground Force in the Downswing
During the downswing, the lead leg plays a critical role.
As the swing transitions toward impact, the lead leg begins to push against the ground and straighten.
This movement allows the hips to rotate faster.
When the hips rotate faster, the upper body and arms follow naturally, which increases clubhead speed.
For many senior golfers, this movement feels unusual at first because they’ve been trying to generate speed mostly with their upper body.
But once the lower body begins driving the motion, the swing becomes much more powerful.

Why Ground Force Improves Consistency Too
Using the ground properly doesn’t just create more distance.
It also improves consistency.
When power comes from the lower body, the swing becomes more stable and repeatable.
Instead of relying on small muscles in the hands and arms, the swing is driven by the larger and stronger muscles in the legs and hips.
This leads to:
- Better balance
- More stable contact
- More predictable ball flight
And ultimately, more confidence over the ball.
A Simple Way to Start Using the Ground
If you want to start using the ground more effectively, begin by focusing on your lower body during the swing.
As you transition from the backswing into the downswing, feel your weight shift into the lead leg.
From there, allow the lead leg to push into the ground as your hips rotate toward the target.
You don’t need to force this movement.
Instead, focus on allowing your body to move naturally while staying balanced throughout the swing.

Work Smarter, Not Harder
Many golfers spend years trying to swing harder to gain distance.
But the real solution is improving how your body moves.
When you learn to generate power from the ground:
- The swing becomes more efficient
- The body works together as a unit
- The clubhead speed increases naturally
And all of that can happen without adding extra strain to your body.
Bringing It All Together
If you want to gain more distance as a senior golfer, don’t focus on swinging harder.
Focus on using the ground to generate power.
When your legs push into the ground and your hips rotate properly, the rest of the swing begins to flow naturally.
At Berman Golf, we focus on biomechanics first.
We don’t teach cookie-cutter swings designed for tour professionals. Instead, we teach senior golfers how their bodies should move so they can generate power safely and consistently.
Because when your body moves correctly, the golf swing becomes much easier.
And when the swing becomes easier, distance becomes a natural byproduct.
