The Senior Golfer Pre-Shot Routine That Can Instantly Shave 5 Strokes

The secret to pure ball striking as a senior golfer has almost nothing to do with your swing.

It has everything to do with the 10 seconds before you take the club back.

Most golfers obsess over mechanics. Plane. Lag. Wrist angles. Tempo.

But if you’re not set up correctly, none of that matters.

Over the past 15+ years working with senior golfers, I’ve seen the same pattern again and again: fix the setup, and you instantly improve consistency — often without changing the swing at all.

Here are the three adjustments that can immediately clean up your ball striking.

Adjustment #1: Pick a Target Within 10 Feet

Most golfers aim at something 120 yards away… and then try to align their body to it.

That’s too far for your brain to calibrate precisely.

Instead:

  1. Stand behind the ball.

  2. Pick your distant target (the green, the flag, the fairway).

Now find something within 10 feet of your ball that sits directly on that target line.

It could be:

  • A leaf

  • A blade of grass

  • A discolored patch

  • A divot

Once you find it, forget the distant target.

Now your only focus is:

Ball → Intermediate target → Clubface

Your brain aligns better to something close. That alone reduces directional errors dramatically.

Adjustment #2: Simplify Ball Position (Especially With Irons)

This one might bruise a few egos.

But here’s the truth.

Most senior golfers do not look the way they think they look at impact.

You may believe you’re leaning forward with shaft lean and compression.

In reality, most seniors reach impact with:

  • Hands level with the ball

  • Belt buckle aligned with the ball

  • No meaningful forward shaft lean

So here’s the simple rule:

If you have an iron in your hand — put the ball in the middle of your stance.

Not forward.
Not back.
Middle.

Why?

Because most senior golfers do not move their lower body well enough to compensate for advanced ball positioning.

Instead of manipulating ball position, simplify it.

When you remove unnecessary variables, consistency improves.

Adjustment #3: Let Your Brain Align You (The “Dancing Feet” Drill)

This is the most powerful piece.

After you:

  • Identify your intermediate target

  • Set the clubface directly at that target

  • Confirm the ball is in the middle of your stance

Don’t grip the club yet.

Place the clubface behind the ball with one hand.

Keep your eyes on:

Clubface → Ball → Intermediate target

Now here’s the key.

Start lightly “dancing” your feet.

Just shuffle them into position naturally.

Don’t overthink it.
Don’t measure it.
Don’t micromanage your stance.

Your brain will subconsciously square your feet to the clubface.

It’s the same neurological principle as throwing a ball. You don’t consciously calculate angles — your body self-organizes around the target.

Once your feet feel set:

  • Grip the club

  • Confirm posture

  • Swing

You’ve eliminated paralysis by analysis.

Why This Works So Well for Senior Golfers

As we age, adding more swing thoughts is the worst thing we can do.

Coordination declines faster under cognitive overload.

The goal is fewer thoughts, not more.

This routine:

  • Clarifies alignment

  • Simplifies ball position

  • Reduces mental clutter

  • Creates consistency before the swing even starts

I’ve seen seniors shave five strokes almost immediately just by implementing this structured pre-shot routine.

We didn’t fix mechanics.

We fixed preparation.

You Can Still Have an Imperfect Swing

Here’s the best part.

You can still have:

  • A flawed backswing

  • Limited flexibility

  • Less-than-perfect tempo

But if you set yourself up correctly, you at least give yourself a chance.

Most mishits don’t come from bad swings.

They come from bad alignment and poor setup.

Fix the 10 seconds before the swing…
And the swing improves on its own.

After graduating from the University of Florida, Dr. Jake Berman, PT, DPT sought out mentorship first from Bob Seton in Destin, FL and then from Aaron Robles in Jacksonville, FL. Both of these mentors have 20+ years of experience helping people keep active and mobile so they can enjoy high quality active lifestyles. What Jake found was that back pain was by far the most debilitating pain and the highest factor leading to decreased physical activity later in life. These experiences are what inspired Jake to specialize in helping people aged 50+ keep active, mobile and pain free despite the aging process. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to alleviate somebody’s back pain so that they can get back to living their best life- especially in Naples! Over the years of helping 100’s of people aged 65-75 become stronger and pain free, one thing for sure has become apparent: “he who rests rots”. Jake is a firm believer that we become stiff then old, not old then stiff. Seriously, think about it...
