Two simple tips on how to initiate the backswing and how to initiate the downswing. Super simple. Two alignment sticks. One of them in your belt loop. Cheat it way out to the side. If you’re a right-handed golfer, cheat it out to the right. Grip the other one like a normal club. The way we’re going to initiate the backswing is by hips first, not hands first. We do not want to initiate the backswing with the hands first. If you initiate with the hands first, you’re telling your brain that your upper body and your arms are the primary mover. You cannot reverse that. We want to swing with the body, so you can’t start with the hands and the arms. So this is what we do.
Initiate with the belt buckle. So now I see this stick is moving. Initiate with the belt buckle. Now my belt buckle cannot turn any farther, and that’s how high my hands go. Then you can finish the swing with your shoulder turning upper body. That’s how you initiate the back swing. Then how you initiate the downswing, in this position I’m just going to go and I’m going to cross this across my chest. I’m going to just do my normal swing through. And now you can see the sticks are not touching. This is telling you that you have an over the top swing. So what we got to do is we got to go into the top of the backswing and then initiate with the belt buckle first so that at this position, the sticks are actually touching, right?
So we’re at our impact position right now. Impact position right now. That’s where we’re at right now. So initiate with the belt buckle. Finish with the shoulder turn. And then initiate with the belt buckle and the downswing. And then make sure at the impact position, the sticks are touching. When the sticks are touching, you’re doing an inside out swing. And then we’re giving ourself the chance to actually lag the club. When you lag the club, then you can hit down on the golf ball. Then you can compress the golf ball. Then you can get a chance at that magical divot and flighting the golf ball. Nice shape and hitting the green and sticking the green. So make sure you try that out. Super easy.
Here’s another view. Initiate the backswing with the belt buckle. Then the belt buckle can’t move any farther. Finish with a shoulder turn. Then once you get there, cross the stick. Now initiate the downswing with the belt buckle again. and make sure at the impact position you can run into yourself right there. That’s going to give you a nice inside-out swing. Try it out over and over again. You should feel all sorts of muscles working and trying to figure out what the heck you want them to do. Make sure you can do it repeatedly over and over again before you try to do it with a golf club because this is how you know. It’s giving you immediate feedback. You can hear the clicking when the sticks run into each other.
Ten times minimum. Make sure you can do it perfectly, 10 times minimum, then maybe try to do that. Make sure you like and subscribe. Dr. Jake Berman

After graduating from the University of Florida, Dr. Jake Berman, PT, DPT sought out mentorship first from Bob Seton in Destin, FL and then from Aaron Robles in Jacksonville, FL. Both of these mentors have 20+ years of experience helping people keep active and mobile so they can enjoy high quality active lifestyles. What Jake found was that back pain was by far the most debilitating pain and the highest factor leading to decreased physical activity later in life. These experiences are what inspired Jake to specialize in helping people aged 50+ keep active, mobile and pain free despite the aging process. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to alleviate somebody’s back pain so that they can get back to living their best life- especially in Naples! Over the years of helping 100’s of people aged 65-75 become stronger and pain free, one thing for sure has become apparent: “he who rests rots”. Jake is a firm believer that we become stiff then old, not old then stiff. Seriously, think about it...
