INCREASE CLUB HEAD SPEED

And we’re rolling, baby! Here we go. Here’s two simple tips on how you can increase club head speed. I say simple and not easy because it is not easy at all. Now, we have to remember that one of the easiest or simplest ways to generate more club head speed is to get a bigger arc. That should not be any secret, right? The bigger our arc is, the faster the thing on the end of the arc is going to be moving. That’s a simple law of physics, right? Bigger the arc, the faster the club head will be moving. Now what everybody tends to do is bring this inside. When you bring it inside, it naturally leads you to
crossing your hands across your body. As soon as you cross your hands across your body, meaning that your hands are no longer in front of your chest, you’ve immediately, instantaneously shrunk the arc. You’ve made it smaller. So just by sheer laws of physics, you’ve already set yourself up for failure because the arc is now smaller. So it’s not going to go as fast. So try this out. as you go into the backswing, think about keeping your hands in front of your chest as far as you possibly can. Once I get right there, I can’t physically turn anymore. So the way that you can raise the club up from here is think about pushing the knuckles in your left hand away from you. Push your knuckles away from you and that’s gonna make you get more shoulder turn while keeping your hands directly
in front of your chest. When you keep your hands directly in front of your chest, you’re maintaining a big arc. The bigger the arc, the faster the club head speed is going to get. So I’m not bringing my hands on the inside. 95% of amateur golfers bring your hands on the inside, and you’re immediately going to start folding your hands across your body, bending the elbow, making the arc smaller. So here’s how you try it out. There’s my target. Think about taking the knuckles in your left hand directly away from the target. So target, directly away from the target. Target, directly away from the target. This will help you keep your hands directly in front of your chest. So do that 10 times.
Then try to do it with the golf club. Target, directly away from the target. Target, directly away from the target. Target, directly away from the target. Now for a lot of you, that might be really, really hard to hold your arm straight, elbow pushing the club one-handed away from the target. If it is, do something else. Use something else. Grab an alignment stick, much lighter. You want to build the muscles in the shoulder here, in the chest, to be able to hold that position because when you can hold that position, then the elbow doesn’t bend. As soon as that elbow bends, you’ve shrunk the arc. As soon as the elbow bends, now you’ve got to extend and you end up flipping at the damn thing and you’re going to lose club head speed and consistency.
So it’s a double negative. So here we go. Left hand to the target. away from the target. Not over here, not up here. Target, away from the target. Club in your hands. Target, away from the target. Not over here, not up here. Target, away from the target. Target, away from the target. And here’s another good one. Here’s step number two on how you can help increase club head speed. The split grip drill. Haven’t done this one in a while. This is another way to help train your brain how to use your body turning in a cylinder while maintaining extension of your hands away from your chest. Address position, take the right hand, slide it halfway off the grip. As you go into the backswing, think about pushing your left knuckles away from you as you’re gently keeping the right elbow tucked in.
Face on view. Slide your right hand halfway off the grip. As you go into the backswing, think about pushing your left knuckles away from you as you go into the backswing. Push. Once you get there, see if you can bring your hands down into a baseball grip, and that will help train your brain how to use these muscles. Do that 10 or 20 times, then see if you can do it with your normal grip. Pushing. Both of these drills are geared towards training you how to keep your hands directly in front of your chest for as long as possible. Keep your hands in front of your chest for as long as possible, the bigger the arc is going to be. The bigger the arc, the faster club head speed is going to be.
And then the best byproduct of all this is the straighter the elbow is, the more consistently you’re going to be striking the golf ball. because as soon as the thing bends, then you have to cast and flip and do all sorts of manipulations to get back to the golf ball. And that’s a fun fact, right? One of the reasons why the pros on tv are able to swing out of their shoes and do the scotty scheffler dance, swinging like a madman, is because they have less moving parts than we amateur golfers have. And generally speaking, they have less moving parts in the wrists and the elbows. Remove those moving parts. Make the golf swing so much easier. Keep the elbows straight. Keep the wrists pretty straight.
Don’t be doing all sorts of flippy stuff. You don’t need to do that. You’re not good enough. Back. Come through the ball. Dr. Jake Berman

After graduating from the University of Florida, Dr. Jake Berman, PT, DPT sought out mentorship first from Bob Seton in Destin, FL and then from Aaron Robles in Jacksonville, FL. Both of these mentors have 20+ years of experience helping people keep active and mobile so they can enjoy high quality active lifestyles. What Jake found was that back pain was by far the most debilitating pain and the highest factor leading to decreased physical activity later in life. These experiences are what inspired Jake to specialize in helping people aged 50+ keep active, mobile and pain free despite the aging process. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to alleviate somebody’s back pain so that they can get back to living their best life- especially in Naples! Over the years of helping 100’s of people aged 65-75 become stronger and pain free, one thing for sure has become apparent: “he who rests rots”. Jake is a firm believer that we become stiff then old, not old then stiff. Seriously, think about it...
