Most amateur golfers struggle using their body during the golf swing because you’re starting the golf swing with your hands. when you start the golf swing with your hands you’re telling your brain right out of the gate your hands are the primary mover of the club head so once you get to the top no matter how hard you practice trying to do this stuff and using your body your brain is already it’s already set to say i don’t care this is what’s going to start the downswing so you can’t ever use your body the way that you’re supposed or you want to you’re trying to so you’re working harder not smarter try the this simple drill. I’ve done this tons of times. I do this with every single one of my clients because it’s so simple but it works.
36 inch foam roller. Put it right against your chest. Reach your hands out as far as you can. Make sure you’re not slouched over. So get that chest up, soft knees, ass back. This is the golf stance. Not down at the golf ball all right so tall chest up, belly button in, soft knees, ass back. This is the golf stance. Then we’re going to go into the backswing, okay? So here’s the same thing head on. Soft knees, ass back, go into the golf swing, go into the backswing. My belly button is still pulled in tight. My right knee is soft. I’m loading through my right foot. My right glute is firing like crazy. And this is all body movement. My arms and hands are not doing a thing.
And this is the top of the backswing right here. So if this were a club in my hand, that’s the top of the backswing. It’s that simple. hands and arms did nothing to get me to the top of the backswing. So now, when we translate it or transfer or put the club back in our hand, same thing. So that’s my body. And then from there, just keep that arm tucked, right? Keep that elbow tucked in. That’s the top of the backswing. So I didn’t do anything with my hands. And because I initiated the movement with my body, my brain now knows that my body is the primary mover of the club head. Not my hands, not my arms. So once I do get to the top, now my brain knows, oh, I’m trying to reverse it now.
Now I can use my body to initiate the downswing and use more power, more torque, more efficiency and avoid the whole flipperoo that every single one of the amateur, not every single one of them, 99% of amateur golfers are guilty of. Arm swinging, flipping at it, swinging harder, not smarter and wondering why the damn ball is not going anywhere. Inconsistency. Inconsistency is due to using your hands to hit the golf ball. When you use your body, it takes out so much of the accessory motions that it gets you consistent more and more than not. So make sure you try this out. The foam roller. Straight against the chest, long arms, soft knees, ass back. Don’t point it down to the ground. It’s not a golf club, right?
Knees soft, ass back. Go into the backswing. Make sure your head doesn’t sway. Core’s firing tight. foot through the ground, and just do it over and over again. I do this on a weekly basis just to re emphasize my brain, the body is the movers, not the hands, not the arms, like, subscribe, share, comment, let me know what you think. After graduating from the University of Florida, Dr. Jake Berman, PT, DPT sought out mentorship first from Bob Seton in Destin, FL and then from Aaron Robles in Jacksonville, FL. Both of these mentors have 20+ years of experience helping people keep active and mobile so they can enjoy high quality active lifestyles.
